The Make Glow template is designed to fit within an 18in x 24in of cardboard piece. The template is so designed to minimise the number of individual pieces that need to be cut out in order to create the lantern structure. As with the Make Glow template, only one piece of cardboard needs to be cut out and folded. The geometry of the template is simple with straight lines, some slants and slots. It doesn't have complex shapes in it, thus, making it easy for anybody to cut the shape with an x-acto knife.

Ease of assembly

The Make Glow structure is designed in such a way that it is easy to assemble. The single piece of cardboard cut out using the template is folded to create the outer structure. The folds are intuitive and can be easily done. The cardboard needs to be scored along the fold lines for achieving perfect folds. The lantern structure is secured with two paper fasteners that connect two flaps on the sides of the lamp.

The lantern structure is designed to maximise light distribution. The slanted head of the lantern holds the LED lights. This slant ensures better light distribution. Also, the solar panel placed at the top face of the slanted/tilted portion ensures that the sun's energy is captured best when placed outdoors/ by the windows.

Wide base

The lantern structure has a trapezoidal shape which results in a wide base. The winged flaps at the sides extend beyond the far edge of the bottom face, thus allowing more surface area of the lantern to be in contact with the ground. This prevents the lantern from toppling, allowing for a strong, stable contact with the surface underneath.

The height of the lantern structure is about 15 cms. This allows for sufficient light to be distributed on the reading/ writing surface placed beneath the lantern.

A 5V solar panel is mounted on the top face of the titled face. 3 nos. of 3.6V LEDs (or 3.6V strip LEDs) are placed in the bottom face of the tilted portion. 3.6V Li-ion rechargeable batteries along with their holders can be housed in the bottom pocket of the lantern (the triangular enclosure formed due to the folds in the bottom).
